As read on KevinMD: what role do specialists have in treating obesity?

A special extra post this month, I was featured on leading physician-focused blog, KevinMD on 6/15/2024.

I wanted to question where non-obesity medicine physician specialists fit in the paradigm of obesity management. It’s not an uncommon thing to hear to be referred away or declined altogether when one seeks help with their weight particularly and historically when specialists are asked. I’d argue the times are changing out of necessity – we’ve become so medically-complex while the systems we access health care through are becoming more clumsy and haphazard to navigate. We all have roles to play and I’d argue the role of the specialist needs to be evolving to a more active role – we can’t sit on the sidelines anymore.

Now, I wouldn’t at all say that all specialists should be primarily offering weight loss services and education, but I’d argue we at minimum need to be expanding our knowledge base on the topic and should be better equipped to at least direct our patients the right direction.
