Understanding Osteoporosis: What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition that compromises bone strength, increasing the risk of fractures that can dramatically affect overall quality of life, or even shorten a life.

This is the unfortunately inevitable consequence of our bones becoming less efficient at remodeling and rebuilding as we age – all of us are at risk of developing this in our lifetimes but the risk greatly increases over age 50.

When talking adults in the US over the age of 50:
* 40% have at least osteopenia (the intermediate point between normal and osteoporotic bone)
* 20% have osteoporosis

This results in fragile bones: these are weakened bones that we won’t ever feel or know are fragile unless:
1. We measure the density with a special X-ray (i.e. DEXA)
2. One of these bones break, and most often from an impact or injury that can be as simple and harmless sounding as tripping on flat ground.

Our Approach to Treatment

Dr. Fellows is a recognized expert in diagnosing and managing osteoporosis, giving lectures on this topic to the community.

Each of us is unique both in terms of our medical circumstances but also our preferences. Some prefer a more conservative approach and elect to avoid prescription medications for osteoporosis, others may want to be more aggressive and utilize these available treatments. We accommodate both and everyone between: the care plans we develop are individualized for each person and their preferences.

We do offer state-of-the-art, advanced therapies including prescription oral, intravenous, and injectable therapies. Our arsenal includes:

– Injectable treatments such as Prolia (denosumab), Evenity (romosuzumab), Forteo (teriparatide), and Tymlos (abaloparatide)
– Intravenous Reclast (zoledronic acid)
– Oral treatments such as Fosamax (alendronate)

These cutting-edge medications are crucial in slowing bone loss, promoting bone growth, and significantly reducing fracture risk.
